Women’s Basketball picks up UMAC play with MLC and BLC

Northland hosts two conference games

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Basketball team plays its first home Upper Midwest Athletic Conference games of 2024, as it hosts Martin Luther College at 5:30 p.m., on Friday and Bethany Lutheran College at 3 p.m., on Saturday at the Kendrigan Center.

The Knights are 4-11 overall and 1-4 in UMAC action. Last week MLC earned its first conference win topping Crown College 80-71 on the road. The following day Martin Luther fell to the University of Minnesota, Morris 64-74. Three student-athletes are averaging double-figures a game; Jordyn Heckendork (11.2), Lydia Feidt (11.1), and Lauren Paulsen (10.3). Junior Grace Kieselhorst is right behind the trio at 9.5 points per game. On the defensive side of the ball, Paulsen surpassed 100 rebounds in the game against UMM.
 
The Vikings midway through the season are 3-13 overall with all three wins coming in conference play. In the UMAC action, BLC is 3-2, after splitting its game last week, first falling to Minnesota, Morris 51-67 then best Crown 84-79. Freshman Gianna Klarenbeek is nearing 200 points in her first season at 198 to lead the scoring for the Vikings. Junior Lexiss Trygg has a team-high 87 rebounds.
 
The LumberJills are coming off a bye week after their two scheduled conference games were postponed to a later date. To start the new calendar year Northland hosted Mount Mary University. The Jills had their best start taking a six-point lead to end the first quarter with Tara Sandoval making two early threes. The Blue Angels had a strong second quarter and NC could not catch up and fell 72-45. The following game Northland was at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Jills had a slow opening quarter and fell in the conference contest.
 
Katelyn Altaha leads the offense with 80 points on the season. Altaha's best game came against Crown College where she had 14 points and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Sandoval has found a groove and has reached double figures in three of the last four games, with her best game coming against UW-Superior where she led the team with 14 points.
 
 
Altaha also paces the teams in rebounds with 55, averaging 5.0 per game. Altaha was one rebound shy or recording a double-double against Mount Mary, while only playing 22 minutes due to foul trouble. Madison Mendoza is second on the team with 45 boards. Mendoza almost reached double figures against the Blue Angles snagging nine rebounds.
