ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Soccer team won its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game of the season 3-2 against Martin Luther College Saturday evening in Ashland, Wis.
Elysabeth Lough kept the Jills in the game with seven saves.
The game started off a little unconventionally with both teams having a misplayed ball from the back ending up in their own net. After 14 minutes the game was level at 1-1 from two own goals. Soon after Hailey Rice of MLC scored to go up 2-1. The Jills had their first crack at goal in the 43
rd minute with
Tiffany Tinsley getting past the backline and level the game going into half.
In the second half the Knights seemed to have the ball in the Jills half for most of the final period of play getting off shots that were stopped by the defense and Lough in goal. Northland broke the run of play and the momentum of MLC when
Clara Schmiesing found the back of the net to put the Jills on top 3-2. The rest of the game the Northland defense held strong in the back not allowing the tying goal and won its first UMAC game of the season.
The Jills only had two chances in the game but it was all they needed capitalizing on both of them to win 3-2. Tinsley scored her third goal of her freshman season and Schmiesing netted her first of the season. Lough saw eight shots, stopping all but one to help the Jills win.
The Jills look to build off their momentum as they host North Central University on Tuesday at 7 p.m., at Ponzio Stadium.
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference, and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
