Jacks start UMAC play off with win over Crown College

Northland wins lowest scoring game this season

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The Northland College Men's Soccer team won its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game Wednesday evening 1-0 against Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minn. This season the Jacks' games have averaged six goals game but only need one to secure the win.
 
The first half of play was the first time this season a team did not score in a half. In the first 45 minutes, the Jacks had two shots on frame from Quinn Bieber. After his shot was saved had another crack at goal but had the same result as the first.
 
The second half had more attempts by the Jacks. Northland scored the only goal of the game coming from Bieber after taking a few touches after collecting the throw-in from Kelan Cattaway. Bieber was outside of the box with space and sent the ball to the back post beating the Crown College keeper. In the 74th minute, the Polars had their best opportunity from a corner with Serni Batalla directing a header toward goal, Jamie Colvill was there to make the save. In the last 10 minutes, the Jacks held strong as the ball nearly stayed in their half. With six seconds left the Polars had a free kick outside of the box and Northland held strong to win 1-0.
 
After only two shots in the first half, the Jacks turned it on and finished the game with 10, half being on target. Bieber led Northland with three shots all on frame and the sole goal of the game. Julian Swensen and Harrison Tibbetts both got two shots off in the second half. Along with Bieber, Keagan Cullbertson and Cattaway tested the keeper.
 
Colvill saw more action in the second half, coming up with two saves for his first full-game clean sheet. Colvill came up big when he was needed to help win the game for the Jacks. The defense for the LumberJacks also did their part holding CC to only five shots all game and only two were on target.
 
Northland will return to Ponzio Stadium Friday as they continue play in the UMAC, when they take on Martin Luther College at 2 p.m.
