ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey (1-8, 0-3 WIAC) team was defeated 4-1 by the University of Wisconsin-Superior (4-5, 2-1 WIAC) in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Friday night at the Bay Area Civic Center in Ashland, Wis. Senior
Andrew Liwiski scored his first goal of the season to avoid being shut out for the first time this season.
The Yellowjackets started the game with six shots before Northland recorded its first.
Brendan Charlton tallied two quick shots for the Jacks to start the offense. At 14:20 UW-Superior found the back of the net from a goal from Palmer Sinclair. Three minutes later they added another to double the lead, entering the first intermission.
Start the second period the Jacks were down a man after a major penalty. The Yellowjackets took advantage of the extra man scoring two goals in less than two minutes. For the rest of the period,
Viktor Wennberg saw 16 more shots and saved all of them.
In the final period, the Jacks were running out of time to keep their streak alive with a goal in each game. With two minutes left, Northland was on the powerplay and eight seconds later Liwiski lands the Jacks on the board to end the game 4-1.
Northland was outshot 49-26 with its best offensive period coming last when they recorded 12 shots.
Ben Stewart, Eric Holold and
Logan Gallagher led the team in shots with three. Gallagher totaled all three of his shots in the final period.
Kenny Styles and
Connor Taylor both finished with over 50 percent on faceoffs with Styles leading the team with 10. Wennberg had another big game in goal tallying 45 saves.
The Jacks and Yellowjackets continue to series tomorrow (Saturday) with another WIAC game at 7 p.m., at the B.A.C.C. at 7 p.m.
