ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey (2-6-1, 0-2-1 WIAC) team split the two-game series with Concordia College, Moorhead (2-4-1, 0-3-1 MIAC) dropping the first game 3-1 then followed it up with a 5-3 win on Wednesday in Ashland, Wis. Freshman
Audrey Ellerington scored her first career hat trick in the win.
Ellerington's hat trick is the fourth program history with the most recent one coming from Samantha Scott against Trine University on Feb. 9, 2019.
In the opening game of the series, the LumberJills got on the board first with a goal from
Kate Holtz in the first period. The Cobbers had many shots throughout the game and limited the Jills to only nine shots. CC leveled the game in the second period and added another goal shortly after. The Cobbers ended game one with a final goal in the third period to win 3-1.
In game two the Jills started hot recording 14 shots and holding the Cobbers to only three shots. Ellerington started the scoring in the seventh minute with
Kyleigh Moffatt and
Hannah Baumann picking up the assist. Six minutes later Ellerington makes it two zero to extend the lead going into the first intermission.
The Cobbers had the momentum in the second period scoring an early goal then continued to send shots toward senior goaltender
Corrin Hanson who made 16 saves in the period.
Concordia started the third period like the second with an early goal. Within a minute of the Cobbers leveling the game, Baumann scored her second goal of the season to give Northland the lead back. Elleringon found the net next for her third goal of the game for Northland's first hat trick in five seasons. The scoring was not done yet with the Cobbers answering back in the next minute to make it a one-goal game for the fine six minutes. Baumann ended the scoring for the Jills to take a 5-3 win.
Ellerington, along with her three goals led the team in shots with five and freshman
Daphne Gray was behind her with four. Moffatt led the Jills in points with five, assisting in all of Northland's goals. Baumann had her first career multiple-goal game and brought her season total up to three. Hanson made her third start of the season in net. She picked up her first win of the season and had 41 saves.
Northland is back in action later this week as they travel to Lawrence University for a two-game series with the Vikings on Saturday and Sunday.
