Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Colvill wins program record 24th game in net

The Jacks win nail bitter 2-1

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Soccer team won a nail-biter 2-1 against Crown College Tuesday night to remain in third in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Senior keeper Jamie Colvill won his 24th game in net for the Jacks setting a new program record for career wins as a goalie.

The game was off to a hot start with the Polars earning a penalty kick in the fifth minute off a handball. Colvill faced Serni Batalla and dove to his right saving the PK and keeping the game level. Crown College initially had a few more attempts, with one hitting the top of the crossbar. Thomas Carey scored his first goal of the season off a set piece. Three minutes later Victor Vancauteren sent a rocket to the goal from well outside the box scoring in the upper right corner. The pace of the game slowed down near the end of the half with only four shots happening in the last 28 minutes.

Five minutes into the second half the Polars cut the LumberJacks' lead to one. For the rest of the match, Crown College had the moment and kept Colvill on his toes. In the second half, the senior recorded four saves. In the last 10 minutes of play, three red cards were issued. In the final 33 seconds, the Polars had a corner kick and pulled their goalie forward. Colvill came away with the ball and booted it forward to end the game.

The Jacks were outshot 5-15 in the game but managed to hold on for the crucial conference win. Northland sits alone in third with 23 points, Crown College is in fourth at 17 and the University of Northwestern is in fifth at 14 with three games remaining. The Jacks will clinch a playoff spot on Saturday if they win or tie Bethany Lutheran College or if Northwestern doesn't win.

The Jacks had five shots in the game all coming from different players. Carey and Vancauteren came up big with important goals in the early part of the match. Julian Swensen assisted on the second goal of the game for his fourth assist of the season. Swensen, Diego Castaneda and Keagan Culbertson recorded the rest of the shots for Northland.

Making his 14th appearance in goal was Colvill, making big saves to keep the Jacks in the game. The senior set a new program record with his 24th win breaking the record by Andy Matheus back in the 1980's. In the match, he tallied six saves in the win over the Polars.

Northland College will be on the road for its next game playing against Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference, and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
