Northland College Men's Soccer dropped a non-conference match on the road at St. Scholastica by a score of 2-1. Izaak Clarke scored the LumberJacks' first goal of the season in the final minute of the contest, but it was not enough to overcome the Saints on Sunday afternoon.
Northland College (0-2, 0-0 UMAC) traveled up the road Sunday afternoon to take on the College of St. Scholastica (1-1, 0-0 MIAC) in Duluth, Minnesota. The long-time UMAC foes met for the second consecutive year in non-conference fashion and played a tightly contested match, ultimately going in favor of the Saints.
Jamie Colvill made his second start of the early season in goal for the LumberJacks. The junior keeper, a first team all-UMAC recipient a year ago, made two saves on the day. The Saints were able to fire 11 shots against the LumberJacks, only four of which were on target. After a scoreless first 30 minutes for both teams, Keegan Chastey found the net to put the hosts in front. The Jacks, who out-shot Scholastica for the game 14-11, put two shots on goal in the opening half, but couldn't find pay-dirt and the 1-0 scoreline would remain for the rest of the half.
The second half began much like the first with 20 minutes of scoreless play. At the 66:41 mark however, CSS was able to add a decisive insurance goal. Northland fought to get back even as they took 4 shots in the final twenty three minutes, finally breaking through when
Nick Diaz found Izaak Clarke, who put the Jacks on the board in the game's final minute. Unfortunately, that proved to be too little time to get another goal and the Saints walked away with the 2-1 victory.
"Obviously, this is a game we really wanted and a difficult result to accept," commentted Head Coach
Greg Gilmore. "I think, for the most part, we created the same amount of chances or more, but just didn't convert. We decided to really challenge ourselves with our non-league schedule by playing teams that match up well with the top teams in the UMAC. Ultimately, these games are going to help us reach our goals in October and November."
Northland will continue their non-conference schedule tomorrow at home as they take the pitch against the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The home opener is scheduled for a noon kickoff at Ponzio Stadium.
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
