Northland Men's Hockey scored with just over a minute left in regulation to pull within one, but the late surge was not enough as they fell to UW-Stout on Friday night 2-3.
Box Score
The Northland College Men's Hockey team played a road conference game on Friday night at UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin. The game was tightly contested throughout, but the Blue Devils scored three goals in the third period to narrowly defeat the LumberJacks 3-2.
The two teams remained scoreless heading into the third period. UW-Stout held a slim 14-11 shot advantage, but neither team could get a goal in the first two periods. The third period was a different story. Senior forward
Ty Brown scored his third goal of the season just over five minutes into the period to give the LumberJacks the lead.
Josh King and
Bryson Cecconi picked up assists on the even-strength play. The Jacks held the lead for a four minute period before the Blue Devils found the net for an even-strength goal of their own. Two minutes later they scored a powerplay goal (the only powerplay goal on either side) to take the lead. They scored again with four minutes later to give themselves a late insurance goal. That insurance was needed because Brown, King and Cecconi were able to combine for another LumberJack goal two minutes later. A late Blue Devil penalty put Northland on the powerplay for the final thirty seconds. The Jacks were able to get two shot attempts, but couldn't get the equalizer.
Viktor Wennberg, who got the nod in goal for the LumberJacks, recorded 25 saves in the contest.
Northland (0-10-1, 0-5-0 WIAC) will return home to the Bay Area Civic Center on Saturday night. Face off against UW-River Falls is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
