Box Score

The Northland College Men's Hockey team returned to the Bay Area Civic Center on Saturday night for their second WIAC game of the weekend, playing host to UW-River Falls. The LumberJacks scored four goals enroute to their first victor of the season.

Luke Hartge got the Jacks on the board in the first period. The LumberJacks had earned their second powerplay opportunity of the night at the 12:07 mark. After getting several shots with the man advantage the Falcons successfully killed the penalty. Just as the even-strength skater was coming on the ice Hartge got a loose puck in front of the net and beat the Falcons goalie for his first goal of the season. Jack Craycroft and Brendan Charlton recorded assists on the play. The Falcons were able to even things up a minute later and the teams remained tied at the first intermission.

The LumberJacks scored twice on the powerplay in the second period. Freshman Bryson Cecconi scored the first powerplay goal 17 minutes into the period on a slap shot from the point. The goal was the first of his collegiate career. Josh King and Kenny Styles each completed passes on the play to earn assists. Two minutes later Brock Weimer scored his third goal of the season. Parker Severson and Ben Varga earned assists on the play and Northland took a 3-1 lead into the third.

With five minutes left in the third the Falcons tried to make a comeback with a late goal. They pulled the goalie in the final minutes to attempt to even the game, but the Jacks were able to score as empty netter to secure the victory. Weimer was able to beat a Falcons skater to a loose puck on a clearance. The freshman fired the shot on the empty net for his second goal of the night and the LumberJacks secured the win.

Northland (1-10-1, 1-5 WIAC) will play a non-conference game on the road next Friday as they travel to St. Scholastica. Face off is scheduled for 7:00 PM in Duluth, Minnesota.

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
