Ashland, Wisconsin - The Northland College Men's Hockey team returned to the Bay Area Civic Center for their third and final home contest of the week on Saturday afternoon as they played host to Saint John's University. Playing in front of packed house, as the programmed welcomed home many alumni and parents for the weekend, the team was unable to overcome nine penalties and dropped the contest 4-1.
The Johnnies took the opening faceoff and challenged the LumberJack's
Chris Curr right away with a shot on goal. The junior goaltender saved the shot and Saint John's fired a few more shots, but Curr got some help from his defense in blocking those attempts. Six minutes later
Cameron Coutre found the back of the Saint John's net to give the Jacks the early lead.
Kenny Styles and
Jackson Breton pickedd up assists on the play. All three points on the goal marked the first points of the season for each of the LumberJacks' forwards. Northland kept the offensive pressure on in the next two possessions following the goal before the momentum began to shift, forcing a Northland timeout to regroup at the 10:21 mark. Following a Saint John's face-off win the Jacks were able to get back into the offensive zone.
Zach Ross fired a wide shot from the point before Luke Hartge got a pair of shots in close. On the ensuing possession for the Johnnies Northland picked up their first penalty of the game. It wasn't long after killing off that penalty that the Jacks found themselves on the penalty kill again at the 16:15 mark. Northland survived the second penalty as well, but the Johnnies used the momentum to even the game late in the first. Curr tallied nine saves in the opening period.
The remainder of the game saw the LumberJacks commit seven penalties, leading to three Johnnie power play goals. Northland earned three power plays of their own, but were unsuccessful on capitalizing with the man advantage. The LumberJack penalty kill unit held the Johnnies to three-for-eight on the night, but the three goals was too much to overcome. Curr finished the night with 28 saves.
Northland (0-3-1, 0-0 WIAC) will take to the road next week. Next up for the Jacks will be Hamline University on Friday night at 7:00 PM.
