Northland College Men's Hockey returned to the Bay Area Civic Center for the first time this season on Tuesday night to take on Finlandia University. The LumberJacks outshot the Lions 31-21 on the night, but the two teams ultimately finish in a tie 2-2.
The first period opened with a quick goal from the Lions. At the 1:18 mark Owen Schmidt found an opening deep in the Jack's zone to put a shot on frame for his first goal of the game. The Jacks responded with a few shots right after the goal before the Lions committed the first penalty of the game. Unfortunately, Northland came up empty on the power play, but were able to get four shots with the man advantage. Each team was able to kill two penalties in the first.
Viktor Wennberg, making his first start of the season, made seven saves in the period to keep the game 1-0 going into the first intermission.
Northland opened the second period with an uptick in shots to test the Lion's goalie. The team fired three shots in the first three minutes before the fourth shot of the period found the net to even the score at one. Rajvir Sangha scored his first collegiate goal at the 3:18 mark. Brock Weimer and Max Collette both picked up their first collegiate assist on the play. Northland spent the next five minutes on the power play. They were able to take numerous shots, but couldn't quite make the man advantage work. Schmidt found the net for a second time to, again, give the Lions the lead. The lead was short lived, however, as Parker Severson was able to score his first goal of the season. Sangha and
Josh King provided the assists, as the Jacks finally broke through on the power play.
The Jacks used 10 shots in the third to try to break the tie, as the two teams traded power play opportunities throughout the period. Wennberg managed to make six saves to help send the game to overtime. OT began with the both teams serving time in the box.
Jake Lamberty's slashing penalty ended 25 seconds in to the extra period and the Jacks were on the man advantage again, but again weren't able to capitalize. A cross checking penalty against the Jacks forced the team to spend a majority of the remaining time on a penalty kill.
"I thought we played well in the five on five situations tonight," commented head coach
Seamus Gregory. "But we have to play smarter to avoid being down a man. Eight times they were on the power play tonight. Moving forward, we cannot give up those type of opportunities and be successful."
The LumberJacks (0-1-1, 0-0 WIAC) will return to the Bay Area Civic Center on Friday night to take on the Cobbers of Concordia-Minnesota at 7:00 PM. The team will, also, welcome back many of the program's former players for Alumni Weekend.
