The Northland College Women's Soccer team returned to Ponzio Stadium on Friday afternoon for their second conference game of the week. Coming off a dramatic game in which the LumberJills found the tying goal in the final minutes to earn the draw against UW-Superior, the LumberJills were able to play a similar game with the visiting Vikings. Unfortunately, they were not able to finish the late game heroics this time, as they dropped the match 1-0.
The LumberJills were able to create some offensive pressure early in the first half as they controlled the ball on the Viking half to open the game. The Jills were able to earn a corner kick four minutes into the game and
Izzy Haverkampf put the first shot on goal a minute later. Haverkampf, also, got free in the box several minutes later for another shot, but the Vikings' keeper was able to make the save on both attempts. Each team put three shots on target in the half, but both keepers were able to secure the attempts.
The second half was a back and forth battle for possession. Bethany Lutheran was able to out-shoot the LumberJills, but only managed to put three of their twelve shots on goal. The Vikings finally broke the scoreless game with a goal in the 52nd minute setting up a very similar finish to the match played on Tuesday. In the final three minutes of the game Northland earned a pair of late corner kicks. Their equilizing goal came off a corner kick on Tuesday, but no such luck on Friday as both attempts were unsuccessful. The second one came close as
Greta Keffer headed the ball just wide off of
Liberty Dickerson's corner attempt.
Elysabeth Lough earned 5 saves in the loss.
The Jills (2-8-3, 1-5-3 UMAC) will return to Ponzio Stadium for the final of three conference home games in the week on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM against Martin Luther College.
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
