When the UW-Superior Men's Soccer team came to Ashland earlier in the season and tied with the LumberJacks it marked the first positive result for Northland against Superior since UWS joined the UMAC. Fast-forward a few weeks to Tuesday night and the Jacks were able to do it again with a 2-2 tie in Superior.
Northland College's defense was tested early and often in the first half. The YellowJackets were able to tally five shots and two corner kicks within the first 8:57 of the game, culminating in a 1-0 lead when Mackie Ringrose found the back of the net. The next nine minutes looked like it would be more of the same as UWS continued to rack up shots and corner kicks. That changed in the 18th minute when
Jonah Evans knotted the game with his first goal of the season.
Quinn Bieber continued his recent hot streak by picking up the assist on the play. Northland was, only, able to get a couple more opportunities for the remainder of the half. Superior would end up taking 14 shots in the half, but Northland's keeper, Jaime Colvill, made four saves to keep the game tied at one.
The second half played out similar to the first with Superior outshooting the LumberJacks 14-2 and earning 8 corner kicks. Jake Kidd scored for the YellowJackets to break the tie in the 71st minute. But that was all the Jacks would allow as Colvill earned six saves in the half to keep them in striking distance for another dramatic finish.
Harrison Tibbetts provided the drama in the 78th minute when a foul in the box by UWS setup a penalty kick. Tibbetts put the PK away for his second career goal and knotted up the game. The draw earns the LumberJacks another point in the standings heading into the second half of the conference season.
"Really proud of the effort the guys put forward tonight," said head coach
Greg Gilmore. "Guys were very disciplined defensively and followed the game plan to perfection. To go down by a goal twice on the road against a team of that quality and come back each time is massive. It's a massive point that the guys earned tonight and this sets up a huge weekend at home with our matches with Bethany Lutheran and Martin Luther."
Northland (5-5-3, 4-1-2 UMAC) returns to Ponzio Stadium on Friday afternoon against Bethany Lutheran College at 1:00 PM.
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
