Northland College Men's Soccer returned to Ponzio Stadium on Friday afternoon for a conference matchup with Bethany Lutheran College. Playing in frigid conditions, including some first half snow flurries, the LumberJacks were held scoreless in the match for the first time in six matches as they lost 4-0. Bethany Lutheran, who sits one spot ahead of the Jacks in the standings, out-shot Northland 19-5 on the day.

Northland created several good looking opportunities in the first half. Bethany Lutheran used several set-piece opportunities throughout the first half to jump out to the early lead. A free kick into the box allowed Antonio Lima to open the scoring at the 17:11 mark. Jonah Evans narrowly missed knotting the game three minutes later when he broke free up the right side of the box. His shot towards the left post was picked off by the Vikings' keeper. Gabriel Casco tried the left side with a similar play, but his shot was again saved. A free-kick goal and a corner kick goal lead to the 3-0 halftime score.

The second half opened with a Viking goal less than five minutes in. The two teams battled the rest of the game to a scoreless finish resulting in the 4-0 final. Jamie Colvill started in net for the LumberJacks and tallied seven saves. Tjaden Whisenhunt came off the bench to record two saves of his own for Northland.

"It is hard to win a game when you don't defend set pieces well," commented head coach Greg Gilmore. "We dug ourselves a pretty deep hole with some poor situational play and you cannot do that against championship caliber teams. On the positive, there were stretches of the game that we showed we could compete with them. Now we have to close out the season with some wins and turn those stretches into a 90 minute performance in the playoffs."

Northland College (5-6-4, 4-2-3 UMAC) will have a quick turnaround, as they return to Ponzio Stadium for a 1:00 PM kickoff with Martin Luther College tomorrow.
