The Northland College Baseball team has announced the schedule for the 2022 season. Fifteen home games highlight the back half of the schedule.
A year after COVID-19 related protocols limited the Northland College Baseball team's travel and opponents, the 2022 season should be closer to a normal schedule. Travel restrictions and a ban on overnight stay forced the Jacks to remain within the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin a year ago, limiting the team to just 31 games. This year the team will have the ability to travel further south in the early part of the season and play a full slate of non-conference games. "The opportunity to play earlier in the year down south provides multiple benefits to our program." said second year Head Coach
Jeremy Snow. "Starting our game schedule before the winter weather has left the North allows us to spread the season out. We miss less class; it helps keep our athletes healthy; and it provides a well rounded student-athlete experience."
The Jacks will open the season in US Bank stadium, as they did a year ago, with a doubleheader against Augsburg. Following that they will travel to Tucson, Arizona for a 6 game spring break trip. "Playing in the indoor stadium is an amazing experience for our guys," added Snow. "And a trip south is vital to our success this year and our recruiting efforts for future LumberJacks. We have a very geographically diverse team with ten states and Canada represented. It is important to play in different parts of the country to continue to add players from all over. Plus, the weather up here in February and early March is not ready to play collegiate baseball. We need to go somewhere warm."
After a non-conference doubleheader with UW-Eau Claire in mid march, the Jacks hit the road for the Chicago area to play in the Wheaton Invitational. The round robin invitational kicks off with a familiar foe as Northland faces former UMAC opponent, the College of St. Scholastica. The weekend will wrap up with Concodia College out of Moorhead, Minnesota before the Jacks face the host, Wheaton College. All games will be played in Carol Stream, Illinois at Lee Pfund Stadium. Snow commented, "This invitational will be a good challenge for our young team to wrap up the non-conference segment of our schedule. All three teams have been very successful over the last few seasons and will be a good test as we prepare for UMAC play."
Six more non-conference games are scheduled throughout the remainder of the season. Northland will head to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota to round out the travel part of non-conference, before hosting both Marantha Baptist and Finlandia University.
New this year, the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference will play three game weekend series with all conference opponents. The teams will meet for a single 9-inning contest on Fridays before playing a doubleheader on Saturdays. Each school's travel partner will play a single 9-inning game once a week for three weeks. Northland's travel partner is UW-Superior. "The addition of a third conference game against everybody is a game-changer," stated Snow. "Now you have a true series winner. That should make the chase for conference postseason even more competitive."
The Jacks look to build off their 6-25 record from a year ago when the season kicks off on March 3rd.
