Ashland, WI – The Northland College Lumberjills took on WIAC rival UW-Stevens Point on Saturday evening and picked up their first WIAC point of the season in a thrilling 1-1 tie.
The Jills jumped out to a lead in the first period courtesy of a powerplay goal from
Karadyn Kiviaho. After winning a faceoff Kiviaho went right at the net and beat the Pointers goaltender to give the Jills the 1-0 lead.
The Jills held onto their lead until early in the second period when Alex Grubbs found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.
Both teams created several chances throughout the remaining periods but neither could find the back of the net.
The Jills had a couple of chances to win the game in overtime. With 22 seconds remaining the Jills had a 2 on 1 but Pointers goaltender Marit Larson came up with a save to preserve the tie.
Gabby Suhr made 35 saves in net for the Jills.
The Jills are in action tomorrow when they host the Pointers again at 2:00pm.
