Yellow Jackets Top Jacks in Game 1

Superior, WI – The Northland College Lumberjacks faced off against the UW-Superior Yellow Jackets in their first ever Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff game on Friday.  The Jacks ultimately fell in the first game of the two game set by a score of 6-3.  Both teams play once more tomorrow at Superior.  If the Jacks are able to win, both teams will take the ice for one twenty minute period to decide who advances to the next round.

The Jacks fell behind early as the Yellow Jackets were able to get on the board three minutes into the game.  At the 7:47 mark the Jacks tied the game at 1-1 after Ty Krause won a faceoff in the Yellow Jacket's zone and Kalib Ford quickly fired a shot past the Yellow Jacket goaltender.

The Yellow Jackets retook the lead at the 12:08 mark and then they found the net two more times to take a 4-1 lead into the first intermission.

The Jacks looked to get back in the game early in the second period but two great opportunities early on were denied by the Yellow Jacket goaltender.  Jackson Barrett had the first opportunity after a teammate found him in space at the left circle, but his shot found the glove of the Superior's Oscar Svensson.  Svensson was tested once again from close range only moments later by Jacob Jeske, but Svensson once again proved up to the task and kept the 4-1 lead for his team.  The Yellow Jackets added one more goal towards the end of the second period to take a 5-1 lead into the intermission.

The Jacks looked to mount a comeback in the third period when Kurt Sonne found the back of the net at the 12:11 mark of the period.  Less than a minute later Ford scored his second goal of the game to make the score 5-3.  The Jacks pulled their goalie for the final two minutes but the Yellow Jackets were able to seal the win with an empty net goal to give them the 6-3 win.

Game two is set for a 4:00pm start tomorrow in Superior.
