SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Northland College Lumberjacks men's hockey team's season came to an end on Saturday evening in dramatic fashion, as the Jacks gave the UW-Superior Yellowjackets everything they could handle in game two of their playoff series.
The Jacks needed a win on Saturday to force a mini game, and despite the Yellowjackets leading three separate times throughout the evening, it seemed like the Jacks always had an answer. The game eventually headed to overtime and the Jacks, knowing anything short of a win wouldn't do, were forced to pull their goalie which allowed the Yellowjackets to seal the game with an empty net overtime winner in the final seconds.
Almost immediately after going behind 1-0 in the first period, Northland responded with a goal of their own.
Kyle Pouncy took a seeing-eye shot from the left circle that a screened Oscar Svensson never saw, tying the game 1-1 just two minutes after the Jacks had fallen behind.
At 11:25 the Yellowjackets regained the lead. Troy York crossed the Northland line and threaded a brilliant saucer pass onto the tape of Coltyn Bates and he wristed a shot past
Gennaro Anzevino to put the Yellowjackets back in front.
Once again, however, Northland had an answer. This time it was
Kurt Sonne doing the damage, as he broke into the Yellowjacket zone and snapped a shot from the circle past Svensson to tie the game just 44 seconds later.
The Yellowjackets got their third lead of the night at 11:50 of the second period when Artur Terchiyev moved into the left circle and spotted Bruno Birzitis wide open off the right post, and he poked home the goal to make it 3-2.
It stayed that way until the late stages of the third period. The Jacks were able to take advantage of a brief two-man advantage on a powerplay courtesy of Pouncy, who picked up his second goal of the game with just over five minutes remaining.
The Jacks had several scoring chances over the final five minutes of regulation, but Svensson was able to keep them out of the net which set up the five minute sudden death over-time period.
The Jacks threw everything they had at the Yellowjackets over the first three minutes, and eventually got called for a penalty with 1:48 left as the Yellowjackets started to take advantage of the Jacks pressing for the winner. The Jacks eventually pulled their goalie to get the extra skater but couldn't find the winner, and instead the Yellowjackets ended the game with an empty net goal with 16 seconds remaining.
