Superior, WI – The Northland College Lumberjacks got goals from
Ty Krause and
Cameron Coutre, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets by a score of 5-2. The Yellow Jackets, who are receiving votes in the national rankings, improved their overall record to 10-2-1 while the Jacks dropped to 3-9.
The Jacks came out fast and had the first three shots on goal, but the Yellowjackets weathered the storm and took the lead before the game reached the five-minute mark. Martan Yelle sent a pass from the right corner to Troy York in the right circle who fired a shot over Jacks goaltender
Will McEwen's glove to make it 1-0. The Yellowjackets increased their lead later in the period when David Kaplan got the puck in the right corner and slid a pass out front to Chad Lopez who found the back of the net with 2:08 to play in the first period.
The Jacks cut the lead in half almost immediately in the second period. Just over a minute into the period
Ty Kraus finished off a beautiful passing play to bring the score to 2-1 at the 1:38 mark. It stayed that way until the closing minutes of the second when the Yellowjackets struck twice to extend their lead to 4-1.
Northland refused to go away in the third period as
Cameron Coutre scored his third of the year at 6:25 to make it a 4-2 game. The Yellowjackets extended their lead to 5-2 at the 11:36 mark of the period.
Will McEwen made 40 saves in his first collegiate start for the Jacks.
The Jacks return to action tomorrow as they host the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons at home. The game is set to start at 7:00pm.
