Jills Fall Late Against Dubuque

11/20/2019 10:10:00 PM

Wisconsin Dells, WI - The Northland College Lumberjills fell to the University of Dubuque Spartans on Wednesday at the Just A Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells, 95-75.  The Jills are now 2-2 on the year.

The size and length of the Spartans really affected the Jills when Dubuque went into their zone defense.  Dubuque won the tip and immediately went in for a layup to score the first points of the game.  After the Spartans split a pair of free throws, the Jills Freshman Sarah Dunbar scored the Jills first points of the game with a 3 pointer, tying the score at 3-3.  Fellow Freshmen Miranda Wagner and Bailey Wynn scored on consecutive possessions to put the Jills up 7-3.  The Spartans scored some easy baskets inside when the Jills full court pressure broke down.  The length of Dubuque in their zone defense began to affect the Jills as turnovers started to mount.  The Spartans lead 24-16 after one quarter.

The Spartans extended their lead to 35-22 early in the second quarter, but then the Jills took a defensive stand and withstood two offensive fouls from Dubuque.  Taking the charges gave the Jills some life offensively as Dunbar hit another 3 with 4:34 left in the quarter to bring the score to 39-29.  On the next possession, Wagner was fouled and she nailed both free throws to bring NC within 8, 39-31.  Despite the offensive spurt from the Jills, the Spartans came to life on both ends of the court and extended their lead to 53-36 going into halftime.

Dunbar had a nice look inside to Junior Sarah Houle for a bucket to start the third quarter. After a Dubuque basket, Freshman Ashley Lopez hit a 3 pointer bringing the score to 55-41.  The Jills brought the Spartan lead down to 12 points on a few occasions in the third quarter, but turnovers and missed shots inside for the NC saw Dubuque's lead grow to 15 after 3 quarters, 69-54.

Despite forcing 30 Spartan turnovers on the game, the Jills just couldn't hit their shots and struggled with Dubuque's size disadvantage.  The Spartans cruised in the fourth quarter to win comfortably, 95-75.

Wagner led NC with 14 points, Dunbar had 11 points, Junior Autumn Ninke and Freshman Bailey Wynn both chipped in 10 points.  Jaden Kelley scored 31 for the Spartans.  Ninke had a great all around game for the Jills despite being very undersized in the post.  The Jjills fought for 18 offensive rebounds and shot 25-34 at the Free Throw line.

The Jills head to North Dakota on November 26th to take on the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks before opening UMAC conference play the following week.
