Jacks Open Up Conference Play- Split With Northwestern

The Northland College Baseball team traveled to St. Paul, MN today for a double-header vs. Northwestern MN and would earn a split, winning game one 16-8 and fall in game two 5-2.

With temperatures hovering around 35 degrees at first pitch, Anthony Corrado would get the start on the hill for the Jacks in game 1. Northland would come out flying on all cylinders offensively with 4 runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a 3 rbi double from Shawn O'Connell. Northwestern would answer with 3 runs of their own to make in 4-3. Northland would answer the bell in the 4th with 4 more runs and hits from Anthony Corrado, Adrian Bethel and Will Lee to take the 8-3 lead. Northwestern would start to chip away with runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th inning but the Jacks would add a run in the 7th and explode for 6 runs in the top of the 8th with a 2 rbi single from Anthony Corrado and a 2 rbi home run over center field from Adrian Bethel. The homer from Bethel was the first of his career as a LumberJack. Corrado would shut the door from the mound in the bottom of the 9th and the Jacks would take game one 16-8.

Corrado would go the distance, allowing 7 earned runs off of 14 hits and would strike out 7.

Corrado would also come up huge at the plate, going 4-5 with 2 rbi. Shawn O'Connell would go 2-3 at the plate with 5 runs batted in. 

Game 1

In game 2, Seth Bayliss would get the start on the mound for the Jacks. The LumberJacks would jump out to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Jakob Freele would score off a wild pitch. With two outs in the bottom of the 3rd, Northwestern would explode for 5 runs off of 4 hits to take the early 5-1 lead. Northland would continue to battle at the plate but would be unable to get any runners home until the top of the 6th inning from an rbi single from Noah Cross that scored O'Connell. Carson Ferry would come in relief in the 7th inning and pitch two perfect innings, but the early deficit would be too much for the LumberJacks and they would fall in game two 5-2.

Northland would have 13 hits in game two and leave 13 runners on base. Jakob Freele went 3-4 at the plate. Lee, O'Connell and Cross would also have two hits in game 2. 

Game 2

Next up for the Jacks is a double-header vs. Crown College on Saturday (4/14). First pitch of game one is set for 1:30 PM.

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution, located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 15 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
