The LumberJills hosted the Finlandia University Lions tonight for their second game of their NCHA weekend doubleheader.
The Jills wasted no time taking control of the game. Less than two minutes into the game, Sophomore
Allyson Reilly found the back of the net off of a pass from fellow Sophomore
Kylie Fahmer. The Jills wouldn't be done, as Sophomore
Ashley Hammes got it past the Lions goaltender off a pass from Sophomore
Michaela Isetts-Williams to give the Jills a quick 2-0 lead. The Jills remained in control for the rest of the period and went into the second with their 2-0 lead intact.
The Jills continued their scoring in the second with an unassisted goal by Sophomore
Samantha Scott, giving the Jills a comfortable 3-0 lead. The Lions threatened multiple times throughout the second, but the Jills were able to keep them at bay and preserve the shutout. The Jills would go into the third period up 3-0.
In the third, the Jills continued the trend of the night and got on the board first with an unassisted goal scored by Freshman
Johanna Cano. The Lions would answer with their first goal of the night and avoid the shutout. However, the Jills would keep the momentum on their side, as
Allyson Reilly found the back of the net for her second goal of the night.
Samantha Scott and
Kylie Fahmer would be credited with assists on the play. With a little over three minutes remaining in the half, Sophomore
Breena Gaskov would rip a shot into the net off a pass from Sophomore
Robyn Matula to put the Jills up 6-1 and seal the victory.
Sophomore
Maggie Cusey finished the night with 26 saves. The Jills outshot the Lions 48-27.
Head women's hockey coach
Kelly Rider commented on her team's performance, "
We've been snake bitten for a bit so it was nice to put up 6 goals and a variety of different goals. I think our team played with more grit today and more together as a team and it was nice for everyone to be rewarded for that. It was a team win and some players that needed to step up for us truly did. Kylie Fahmer had one of her best games in a while. Maggie Cusey had crucial breakaway saves. Allyson Reilly had the gorgeous and important 5th goal for us. Jojo Cano played disciplined, with heart, and grit all weekend and it paid off with a goal for her. And then two of our hardest workers, Ashley Hammes and Breena Gaskov, were awarded with hard working goals too. It was nice to get contributions from everyone. We are looking forward to another important conference weekend at home next weekend when we face Trine. Friday night's game will also be our "Pride Night."
The LumberJills will be back on the ice at home on 1/26 against Trine University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm.
