LumberJill Hockey Drops Game to #3 Adrian

2/11/2017 7:58:00 PM

The Northland College LumberJills wrapped up a two game series with #3 nationally ranked Adrian, Saturday afternoon.

In the first period the Bulldogs out shot the Jills 20-7, but Northland forced most of the shots from the perimeter. Chloe Marshall came up with a couple of big saves when the team needed it and the LumberJills nearly escaped the period tied at zero. Unfortunately, with 1:11 left in the period Emily Duncan scored to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.

Head Coach, Kelly Rider, stated, "The team played so well in the first. The effort from everyone was outstanding. Unfortunately, we made one mistake in the first and good teams like Adrian capitalize on them."

Northland started the second period on the power play, but Adrian was able to score a shorthanded goal from Hannah Dalrymple. The Bulldogs would add another goal with just over five minutes to go in the period from Kristin Lewicki. The Jills continued to hang tough and played one of their best second periods of the season, limiting Adrian to 16 shots on net.

Rider added, "It's been tremendously positive and encouraging to see how our team continues to improve each day, each game, and through the entirety of this season. Yesterday, we gave up 39 shots alone in the second and today the shots were 16-8."

The LumberJills continued to show a lot of pride and effort in the third, but Adrian scored at 11:12 (Kaylyn Schroka) and 16:38 (Sydney Smith) to bring the final score to 5-0 for the Bulldogs.

Chloe Marshall was great in net and finished the night with 53 saves. Assistant Coach, Lauren Zachwieja, commented that, "Chloe always comes up big when we need her to. She always pushes herself to make every save she can, whether it is coming up with the second or third save or stopping a breakaway."

After the game Rider added that she was "incredibly proud for the effort displayed over the last 6 periods. This team has grown so much and has really pushed themselves to improve as a team physically and mentally on and off the ice. When you build a program you do so with the understanding that you may not be as competitive as you'd like from the beginning, but this team continues to show that despite being a new program of nearly all freshman, they have put in the work  to be competitive now and the future for Jills hockey is very bright."

This Jills wrap up their inaugural season when they travel to play UW-Superior on Wednesday. The puck drops at 7pm.
