Ashland, WI -
The LumberJills defeated the #2 nationally ranked Adrian College Bulldogs today at the Bay Area Civic Center. Last year, the Bulldogs lost in overtime in the National Championship game and went undefeated in NCHA play. The year prior the Bulldogs only lost 1 game in NCHA play.
The Jills were ready to go from the start today as Sophomore
Samantha Scott would fire a shot into the back of the net off of an assist from fellow Sophomore
Robyn Matula to put the LumberJills up 1-0. The Bulldogs would threaten to tie the game multiple times in the first period, but the LumberJills' defense would be able to keep them at bay and preserve the 1-0 lead. The Jills kept the pressure on in the second period, as Sophomore
Amanda Abounader ripped a shot past the Bulldogs' goaltender and into the back of the net off of a pass from Sophomore
Kylie Fahmer to give Northland a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs were unable to break through the LumberJills defense and would remain scoreless going into the third period. The Bulldogs would strike first in the third period and cut the LumberJills' lead down to 1. A penalty would open the door for the Bulldogs as they would find the back of the net and tie the game up at 2-2. Northland would threaten to retake the lead multiple times in the period, but weren't able to capitalize, and the game would head into overtime. However, the Jills would only need 19 seconds in overtime to get the job done, as Sophomore
Allyson Reilly would put in the game winner off of another
Kylie Fahmer assist.
Head Women's Hockey Coach
Kelly Rider commented on her team's win, "All of our players have put in a lot of time into developing our winning culture, doing the little things, and staying the course. No matter if we were up by 2 or tied tonight they played our game. We were out shot a lot, but Adrian probably had ten real scoring opportunities. It was another full team win. We played well defensively and stayed patient. When we got opportunities we took advantage of them.
Gabby Suhr came up with big time saves in the second and third. We won crucial face offs. We scored on a PP, our PK was great, our bench was loud. It was another all around effort. Tonight's win was not just a big win for our program, but we also sit at 2-2 for the year after facing two strong teams. It's humbling to see others start to recognize and see the work our players have put in. And I'm excited that the work our players have put in is starting to result in W's."
Today's win was the first NCHA win in program history.
Freshman
Gabby Suhr earned her first collegiate win today and finished the day with 64 saves.
Northland will be back on the ice 11/10 in Duluth, MN where they will face the College of St. Scholastica Saints. The game is scheduled to begin at 7pm.
