The LumberJill hockey team opened the second semester of play at home against the Wildcats from St. Catherine University. Northland was able to score 4 goals in the 2
nd period, but that was not enough as they would lose 5-4.
The 1
st period Northland came out slow with only five shots on goal, while the Wildcats came out strong and had 14 shots on goal, but
Chloe Marshall was just as strong for the LumberJills with 14 saves. If you like offense the 2
nd period was good for you. Between the two teams, there were 30 shots on goal and eight goals scored. Just over a minute in the period the LumberJills scored their first ever home goal with
Allyson Reilly scoring with an assist from Amanda Abounder. A few minutes later the Wildcats would score two goals to go up 2-1. The LumberJills kept on fighting and
Ashley Hammes scored an unassisted goal at the half way point of the period to tie the game at 2-2. St. Kate's would sneak in another goal to take the lead back with just over five minutes to play in the period. Then with under three to play in the 2
nd period
Kylie Wickiser and Reilly would score back to back unassisted goals to put Northland up 4-3. Unfortunatley that lead was erased with just one second left in the second as the Wildcast would find the net to tie the score at the end of the second period 4-4.
The LumberJills struggled to get shots off in the 3
rd period as will with only five shots on goal, St. Catherine was able to score a goal in the final period to give the Wildcats a 5-4 win. Marshall finished the night with 46 saves.
LumberJill Coach
Kelly Rider commented after the game. "The 1
st period was rough as it was the first game after break, but it was positive to get out of it 0-0. It was nice
to see us put up that many goals in the 2
nd period, but disappointing for us to give away another winnable game. I hope we can learn from this and come back ready to take on a very strong team this weekend."
The LumberJills will face the Falcons from UW-River Falls this weekend in a two game series here in Ashland at the Bay Area Civic Center. Friday game time is 7:00pm and Saturday the puck will drop at 2:00pm.
