The 2016-2017 Northland Women's Hockey Team will has had many 'firsts' this year, first practice, first game, and first win. Tonight was another, the first home game. The LumberJills hosted the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers at the Bay Area Civic Center where Northland College President Dr. Michael Miller dropped the ceremonial 1
st puck.
Head Coach
Kelly Rider said "It was nice to finally after a year and a half of building this program to have a home game and play in front of our own fans and everyone that has supported this program."
A great game it was, the LumberJills and Cobbers skated to a 0-0 score in the 1
st period. Concordia out shot Northland, but
Chloe Marshall had a strong period with 13 saves. In the 2
nd, the LumberJills came out strong and had 14 shots on goal, but the Cobbers were able to sneak one by Marshall early in the period to go up 1-0. The 3
rd period was again controlled by Concordia as they would out shoot the LumberJills, and find the back of the net one more time for the 2-0 win.
Although the Jills were unable to get much going offensively they had some great shots and played very good defense. Marshall was outstanding in the goal with 42 saves on the night.
"Our team played really hard tonight, but just ran out of gas and time. To end the 1
st semester schedule only giving up two goals to the top team in the MIAC, who is also getting top 10 votes nationally is very promising for the future of our program. We are excited for the direction we are headed, especially now that we have a long stretch of home games coming up." Said Rider after the game.
The LumberJills will get a few weeks off for the holiday break and will open the second semester at home against St. Catherine University on January 10
th for a 5:00pm game at the Bay Area Civic Center.
