The Northland College LumberJill Hockey team earned their first women's hockey program win Wednesday night at Finlandia University in Hancock, Michigan!
Despite a slow start
Kylie Wickiser scored her first collegiate goal at 8:23 in the 1
st period from
Michaela Isetts-Williams and
Emma Vandergeest. The Lions would tie it up before the end of the period to make it 1-1 at the end of one.
Robyn Matula scored an unassisted goal just 1:07 into the 2
nd period to give the LumberJills the lead again. Then the team struggled to hold the lead as Finlandia netted two goals before the 2
nd period was over to take the lead 3-2 going into the final period.
Northland then regrouped and
Allyson Reilly scored to tie the game up at 3-3 at the 5:10 mark in the 3
rd period. Goaltender,
Maggie Cusey, came up with a couple big saves to keep the LumberJills in it.
Robyn Matula would score her second goal of the game, the game winner, at 12:47 with another assist from
Emma Vandergeest. Cusey would finish the game with 34 saves.
Head Coach,
Kelly Rider, commented that, "While we didn't play our best hockey tonight, the team has worked very hard to get to this point, and I'm glad they were rewarded for all their work leading up to this game. It's always positive to get your first win under your belt, and hopefully this is the first of many in LumberJill Hockey history."
Northland will continue to familiarize themselves with NCHA opponents when they head next to to St. Norbert College on Tuesday, November 15
th for a 7:00pm game.
