5/3/2015 11:03:00 AM

ASHLAND, Wis. - The Northland College baseball program will compete at the UMAC Conference Tournament for the fourth consecutive season and will be the No. 2 seed for the second consecutive season.

THE FIELD: The 2015 UMAC Baseball Conference Tournament, headquartered at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn., will feature the same four teams from the 2014 tournament with the teams seeded in the same positions.  St. Scholastica won the regular season title once again with a 20-1 record and their only blemish being a loss to Minnesota-Morris.  Northland clinched the two seed for the second consecutive season after owning the tie breaker against Northwestern with both teams finishing 13-8 in conference play.  Bethany Lutheran rounds out the field with the four seed after going 11-10 in conference play.

NORTHLAND VERSUS THE FIELD:  Northland went a combined 5-4 against the rest of the field during the regular season.  The Jacks opened UMAC play this season sweeping Northwestern on the road before being swept by St. Scholastica in the middle of the season.  Northland rebounded shortly after taking two of three from Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, Minn. where the Jacks narrowly missed a sweep.

UMAC LEADERS:  Trevor Bernsdorf and Daniel Wood of St. Scholastica lead most hitting and pitching categories, respectively, in the UMAC this season.  Bernsdorf hit .429 on the season with 45 runs batted in to lead the conference in both categories, while Wood went 8-0 with a 1.29 earned run average.

The senior group of Northland had a great season as a whole and are found in plenty of places atop the individual statistics.  Senior shortstop Matt Lennon hit .386 this year with 35 runs batted in to put him in fourth for both categories.  Senior first baseman Daniel Kollauf finished fifth with a .382 batting average and was second in the UMAC with 39 runs batted in just behind Bernsdorf.  On the mound, senior pitcher Kyle Strom finished behind Wood with a 7-4 record and a 2.50 ERA with fellow senior pitcher Logan Schuman in third with six wins on the year and 54 strikeouts.

Northwestern has a pair of hitters tied for second in the conference with four home runs in Ryan Sutterer and Tyler Osborn.  The Eagles also have the speedy Braxton Lindow who led the UMAC with 24 stolen bases.

Adam Geiger had a solid senior campaign for Bethany Lutheran finishing second in the conference with a .411 batting average.  Geiger hit a walk off home run in the third game against Northland to prevent the LumberJack sweep.

TEAM STATISTICS:  The seeding is a reflection of the team statistics as the Saints finished atop the conference in nearly every statistical category scoring 100 more runs than any other team in the conference.  Northland was able to finish second in most categories but were unable to surpass St. Scholastica to lead any categories.

SCHEDULE:  The 2015 UMAC Baseball Tournament opens Thursday, May 7 at 10 a.m. when No. 2 Northland takes on No. 3 Northwestern before No. 1 St. Scholastica plays No. 4 Bethany Lutheran at 1 p.m. to conlcude the first round.  The losers of the first round will play the first elimination game of the tournament at 4 p.m. with the winners playing at 7 p.m. in game four of the tournament.  The action will continue Friday, May 8 when winner of the elmination game takes on the loser of the late game at 1 p.m. with the loser being eliminated.  The winner then moves on to take on the winner from game four at 4 p.m. with an if necessary championship game set for Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m.
