PREVIEW: Northland Hosts Carleton for Senior Day

ASHLAND, Wis. - Northland College (17-22, 13-8 UMAC) hosts Carleton College to finish the regular season at 1 p.m. Monday, May 4.

THE GAME:  Northland College hosts the Carleton College Knights in the regular season finale before the UMAC Tournament later in the week.  Last season the two teams met and the Knights were able to pull away early taking the game with a final of 15-4. 

LAST ACTION:  The Jacks took two of three from Martin Luther last weekend with victories of 7-6 and 24-1 in the opener followed by a 9-4 loss in the finale.  Northland was able to clinch the No. 2 seed for the UMAC Tournament for the second consecutive season with the wins.

SENIOR CLASS:  The five members of the Northland College LumberJack baseball program will be honored before they play their final game at LumberJack Field.  This senior class helped the Jacks to 70 wins in their respective careers and are the first group to play in the UMAC Tournament all four seasons.

Outfielder Jacob Hodgdon will be going out with the best season of his career.  Hodgdon hit .370 on the season with 44 hits and 22 runs batted in, all career-highs.  Hodgdon did all this with 52 less at bats than he saw last season.

Pitcher Kyle Strom has been a dominating presence on the bump all four years of his career.  Strom threw the first no-hitter since 2006 against North Central and is in the running to become the UMAC Pitcher of the Year.  The right hander went 7-4 with a 2.50 earned run average and 53 strikeouts in 82.2 innings of work.

Shortstop Matt Lennon has been a big bat in the meat of the order for Northland all four years of his career.  Lennon has been named a member of the All-UMAC team three times in his career highlighted with a first team nod as a sophomore.  Lennon had another great year for the Jacks hitting .386 with a team-high 54 hits.  The everyday shortstop for Northland also scored 32 runs and hit in another 35 this season as the No. 5 hitter.

Utility Logan Schuman saw time behind the plate, at first base and on the mound in his career.  Schuman spent the first three years of his career as the closer for Northland before taking on the role of the No. 2 starter this season.  Schuman went 6-4 in his first full season starting with a 4.42 ERA and two shutouts in his 77.1 innings of work.

First baseman Dan Kollauf has been one of the top hitters for Northland his last two seasons and was named First Team All-UMAC last season.  Kollauf hit .382 this season with 52 hits and 39 runs batted in.  The big lefty hit for the cycle this season against Martin Luther and recorded nine RBIs in the victory.

SCOUTING CARLETON: The Knights will play their fifth game in three days after doubleheaders at Concordia College and Lawrence University.  Carleton, a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, are 13-23 on the season with a 7-11 record in MIAC play, this excludes the results of the doubleheader against Lawrence.  Captain Hayden Tsutsui leads the Knights with 54 hits for a .386 batting average.  Tsutsui also has 10 home runs on the season with Nolan Baker leading the squad with 38 runs batted in.  The Knights only have two players who have made more than five starts this season with Josh Johnson making a team-high 14 appearances out of the bullpen.  Johnson is 4-1 on the year with a 3.00 earned run average in his 21.0 innings of work.

UP NEXT:  Northland heads to Wade Stadium in Dululth, Minn. as the No. 2 seed in the UMAC Tournament.  The Jacks open with No. 3 Northwestern at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 7 and depending on the result will either play at 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. that same day.
