HANCOCK, Mich. - Finlandia University used a fast start offensively to defeat Northland College (15-21, 11-7 UMAC) 5-2 in non-conference action.
Finlandia was able to get on the board quickly scoring an unearned run in the first inning followed by two home runs in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Jacks answered in the top of the third cutting the lead in half with a pair of runs.
Senior outfielder
Jacob Hodgdon started the inning with a bunt single down the third base line and scored two batters later after a double from senior first baseman Dan Kollauf. Freshman catcher
Alex Loberger followed with an RBI single to score Kollauf and bring the score to 4-2.
The Lions responded with a two out rally in the fourth inning using a single followed by a double to extend their lead back out to 5-2.
Northland would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning after a double from Hodgdon and a walk from junior outfielder Mitch Howard but the Jacks were unable to plate any runs leading to the 5-2 final.
Senior pitchers
Logan Schuman and
Kyle Strom combined for four innings of relief on the mound allowing three hits and one run with six strikeouts.
Northland finishes UMAC play this weekend hosting Martin Luther College Friday, May 1 at 3 p.m. with a doubleheader Saturday, May 2 at noon.
