ASHLAND, Wis. - Northland College (15-20, 11-7 UMAC) swept their series with North Central behind a pair of shutouts with finals of 5-0 in the opener and 16-0 in seven innings for the finale.
The three game sweep of the Rams this weekend with three complete game shutouts was the first time in program history the Jacks were able to sweep an opponent without allowing any runs over the course of the weekend.
In the first game of the twin bill it was senior pitcher
Logan Schuman (Wild Rose, Wis.) (5-4) who went the distance for his second consecutive complete game shutout. Schuman would scatter two hits and three walks with 10 strike outs in his nine innings of work.
Northland was able to get on the board right away in the first once again to take the early lead. Freshman outfielder
Jakob Freele (Smartville, Calif.) and senior
Jacob Hodgdon (Winnebago, Ill.) opened the game with a pair of singles and were both moved over on a ground out from junior outfielder Mitch Howard (Black Earth, Wis.). Senior shortstop
Matt Lennon (Reedsburg, Wis.) then hit a fly ball into left field for the sacrifice to bring in Freele and put the score at 1-0.
The Jacks were back at it in the third when Hodgdon, Howard and Lennon were able to load the bases to start off the inning. Senior first baseman Dan Kollauf (Ashland, Wis.) then drove in a pair with a single into right field to put Northland up 3-0.
Freshman second baseman
Matt Alberino (Medford, Mass.) was able to place an RBI single into right field in the fifth that plated Kollauf, while in the sixth Hodgdon knocked in Freele after the freshman reached on an error and swiped a bag to put the Jacks up 5-0.
The Rams were able to load the bases in the eighth but were held scoreless after Schuman induced an easy comebacker to end the inning as Northland took the opening game of the doubleheader5-0.
Kollauf would finish the game 3-4 with a triple and two runs batted in to lead the Northland hitters.
The Northland bats came alive in the second game as they scored in every inning on their way to the sweep. After the first two Jacks were retired to open the game, the next seven Northland hitters were able to reach base en route to a five run inning. Freshmen
Alex Elliott (Middleton, Wis.) and
Alex Loberger (Maribel, Wis.) recorded RBIs in the inning, while Kollauf hit in a pair of runs to open the scoring.
Howard, Lennon and Kollauf recorded three consecutive RBI hits in the second as the Jacks extended their lead out to 8-0.
The third inning saw another two-out rally as Lennon added two more RBIs on the day with a double and was followed up with another Kollauf RBI single.
Freshmen Padden Kottwitz (Burbank, Wash.) and
Alex Brostowitz (Marshfield, Wis.) each had at bats that produced runs late in the game as Northland cruised to the 16-0 win.
Freshman pitcher
Dylan Porter (Rio Rancho, N.M.) (3-3) was solid on the bump for the Jacks going all seven innings only allowing one hit, while striking out eight batters.
Kollauf finished the game going 4-4 with five runs batted in and a run scored, while Lennon would go 3-3 with three runs batted in and three runs.
Northland next travels to Finlandia University in non-conference action Tuesday, April 28th with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. (EST).
