MAUSTON, Wis. - The Northland College LumberJacks dropped their game with Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on Sunday despite a late inning comeback.
The Jacks came out swinging on Sunday as they loaded the bases in the first inning which allowed
Matt Lennon (Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg HS) to single home two and put them out to an early lead. Two batters later,
Damion Freeman (Sacramento, CA/Inderkum HS) singled home two more runs to give the Jacks a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.
However, Northland's starting pitcher,
Michael Dieneman (Dayton, NV/Dayton HS), wasn't able to get out of the first inning after giving up 6 runs while only recording one out.
Jacob Smith (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc HS) come on to pitch for Dieneman. Smith threw 2.1 innings allowing 5 runs.
With the Jacks down 11-4, Freeman came on to throw 5 innings while only surrendering 1 run. This allowed the Jacks to chip away at the Raiders lead. In the 4th inning,
Mitchell Howard (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights HS),
Alex Loberger (Maribel, Wis./Denmark HS), and Lennon all recorded an RBI as the Jacks cut the lead to 11-7.
The Raiders extended their lead to 12-7 in the 5th inning as they plated the ony run Freeman would alow in his 5 innings of work. Northland would answer in the top of the 6th by putting a 3 spot up and continuing to chip away at the lead. Howard stayed hot and started the scoring by doubling home
Jacob Hodgdon (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago HS), who lead off the inning with a single. Loberger then singled homw Howard for his second RBI of the game. Lennon got things going again with a single after Loberger was caught trying to steal second base.
Matt Alberino (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) then came up with a big two out single scoring Lennon.
With the Jacks down two in the top of the 9th inning and down to their final out,
Jakob Freele (Smartville, Cal./Nevada Union HS) came to the pate and singled home two runs which eventually sent the game into extra innings. Neither team was able to plate a run in the 10th extending the game to the 11th, which proved to be the Raiders inning. Ryan Newman walked with 1 out and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball. After a strikeout and a passed ball, Newman scored the winning run on a single to center field, ending the game 13-12 in favor of the Raiders.
The loss sends the Jacks record to 4-8. They will be back in action next Sunday, March 22nd against Lakeland College in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
