Jacks Rally In Final Period but Fall Short of the Win

2/7/2015 11:52:00 PM

ASHLAND, Wis. - In the final game of the series between Northland College and Concordia University (Wis.), the Jacks offered a rally in the third period but could not counter their first period deficit. This heated battle in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) was defined by power plays as the two teams combined to record 12 throughout the contest. The Jacks converted just one of their power play opportunities while the Falcons converted on three.

The Jacks began the game with immediate pressure, testing the Falcons' goaltender and forcing him to make three early saves. Following shots by senior Matt Lennon (Reedsburg, Wis./Madison Capitals-AAA), freshman Timothy Perks (Oxford, Mich./Blind River Beavers-NOJHL) and junior Colby Spoonemore (Billings, Mont./Williston State College-NJCAA), the Jacks gave up the first power play of the game. The Falcons took advantage of this early opportunity and led just 2:25 into the first period. The puck would then see both ends of the ice in the first period with a high paced, attacking storyline from both teams. A second power play goal, however, would be scored at 14:42 sending the Jacks down 2-0 going into the break.

As the Jacks looked to narrow the scoreline entering the second period, they would fall short of this attempt with the Falcons recording their third goal of the game just after faceoff. Coach Seamus Gregory demanded more from his men as he made a few tactical changes and built up pressure against their opponents. The third period proved to be in favor of the Jacks with an unassisted goal from familiar face Darius Cole (Aurora, Col./Williston State College-NJCAA) on a power play just 22 seconds into the period. Senior Zeke Yslas (Denver, Col./Seattle Totems-WSHL) would tack onto the points with his own unassisted goal late in the game.

Northland goaltenders Jesse DiLillo (Fresno, Cal./New Jersey Renegades-MetJHL) and Tyler Ampe (Hermantown, Minn./Williston State College-NJCAA) would split time in this matchup. The Falcons recorded 31 shots while the Jacks competed closely with 26 shots throughout the game.

Northland returns to action at the Bay Area Civic Center in a final NCHA series against St. Norbert on February 13th and 14th. The puck drops at 7 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
