Jacks Battle St. Norbert into Overtime but Come Short of the Win

ASHLAND, Wis. - Northland College hosted Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) opponent St. Norbert and provided the fans with much entertainment on this Friday night battle. The puck saw both ends of the rink as the LumberJacks and Green Knights held a back-and-forth scoreline, eventually resulting in a 4-3 overtime loss.

The Jacks opened the scoring with a late Timothy Perks (Oxford, MI/Blind River Beavers NOJHL) goal in the first period. The Knights held an 11-3 advantage in shots in the early stages of the game but the Jacks boasted the 1-0 lead heading into the locker room at first break.

The second period offered a different storyline, with the Green Knights recording three of their four goals while Anthony Stempin (Livonia, MI/NJ Junior Titans - EHL) had the lone goal for the Jacks. Stempin also saw 21 faceoffs throughout the course of the game and won half of those matchups.

In an effort to extend their season, the Jacks took the Green Knights into overtime with a goal just 9 minutes left in regulation time by Colby Spoonemore (Billings, MT/Williston State College - NJCAA). The game not only relied on attacking brilliance by the three goal-scorers but also the relentless defensive line who absorbed pressure, denying opportunities and forcing quick transitions. The Green Knights recorded 50 shots throughout the course of the game compared to the Jacks 17. Jesse DiLillo (Fresno, CA/NJ Renegades - MetJHL) held strong in goal, recording 46 saves and continuing his impressive stats within the NCHA.

St. Norbert's Marian Fiala would finish the scoring for the day just 32 seconds into overtime, ending the first game of this weekend series.

Northland will host St. Norbert at the Bay Area Civic Center on Saturday. The puck drops at 3 p.m. for the final regular season game of the NCHA 2014-2015 campaign.
