Ashland, Wisc.- The Northland women lost a heartbreaking game against Bethany Lutheran College 3-5 at home. The Jills gave up 2 early goals and then battled in the midfield throughout the rest of the half.
From there, the team gained their bearings. Within a span of 3 minutes, Madeleine Wieland (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) netted a pair of back to back goals after build up plays through midfielders Alexandra Ritchie (Waldo, Wisc.) and Laura Rethmann (Nashville, Tenn.). Coach Griggs was "impressed with the team's quick impact in the second half and ability to put Bethany Lutheran on the back foot." Wieland then gained her second hat trick of the weekend in the 77th minute to put the Jills ahead 3-2.
The final score ended 5-3 in favor of Bethany Lutheran after the Jills lost momentum at the end of the game. Griggs later stated, "The young team gained experience today and will recognize how to hold a lead moving forward. We will continue to persevere and focus on the little details." The Northland women face Finlandia University at 2 p.m. at home on September 30th.
