Romano's Walk-Off Salvages Split with Martin Luther

5/2/2013 1:11:00 PM

MORRIS, Minn.- Dan Romano's walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed Northland College (13-12, 7-6 UMAC) to win game two 12-11 after a tough loss in the opener 11-10.

Martin Luther was able to take advantage of three Northland errors to take game one by a final of 11-10.  A persistent Knight offense was able to take a 4-3 lead going into the seventh inning, before both offenses went off and made the game a high scoring affair.  The Knights scored four runs in the top of the seventh, but Northland was able to tie the game up with a five run inning of their own in the bottom half.  Peter Aerts started the inning with a walk, which was followed by a Nathan Brown fielder's choice and a Travis Hendrickson walk.  A wild pitch would advance both runners, before Matt Lennon would drive an RBI single to bring in Brown.  Then with two outs Moberly would single to bring in Hendrickson.  The two-out rally would continue with a Dan Kollauf double to bring in two runs, and  a Jacob Mogged single to bring in Kollauf.

The tie wouldn't last long, however, as Martin Luther would get back on the bats with a three run inning.  Northland had an answer with a two run inning.  Brown got the inning going with a one-out single and was driven in thru a Hendrickson triple, and would score in the next at bat thru a Lennon sacrifice fly.  This would bring the game to 11-10 with Martin Luther leading, but Northland was unable to get anything going in the ninth and the final would stand at 11-10.

Travis Hendrickson was 2x4 with two runs hit and three runs batted in, and Peter Aerts went 1x2 with three walks and two runs scored.

Game 1 Box

The Jacks would be outhit by Martin Luther, but found a way to salvage the dramatic split with a game two victory of 12-11.  The offenses for both sides got out to fast starts as after five innings the score was 11-7 Martin Luther leading.  The comeback would start in the bottom of the sixth for Northland with a two run inning.  Travis Hendrickson got the inning started off right with a lead off triple and scored in the next at bat thru a Matt Lennon single.  Lennon would steal second, and advance to third by a pass ball.  Dan Romano would then bring in Lennon with a fielder's choice to bring the game to 11-9.

The Jacks would chip away and cut the deficit again in the eighth inning with another run, thru a two-out rally.  Colin Moberly was hit by a pitch to start the rally, and Mitch Howard roped a single to keep the inning alive.  A wild pitch would move both runners up a base, and Moberly would score thru another wild pitch later in the same at bat.

A dramatic ninth inning saw the Jacks tie the game up at 11, and send the game to extra innings.  Jacob Hodgdon drew a one-out pinch-hit walk to start the inning for Northland.  A pair of wild pitches would advance Hodgdon to third.  Nathan Brown stayed patient at the plate and drew a two-out walk.  Then with Hendrickson at the dish, a wild pitch would bring Hodgdon home to knot the game up.

The Jacks held Martin Luther scoreless in the top of the tenth, and wasted no time in riding their momentum to finish off the Knights.  Lennon would start the inning by roping a line drive into left-center that found a way past the Knight center fielder, and Lennon got on his horses to get to third.  Then with one-out the Knights intentionally walked Mitch Howard to get to Dan Romano.  Romano made sure to take full advantage by ripping a single to bring in Lennon and give Northland the win.

The bullpen for the Jacks was excellent going the final four innings allowing only two hits, and zero runs.  Mitch Howard went 3x4 with two walks, a run, and two runs batted in to lead Northland.
