MINNESTRISTA, Minn. - Northland College (5-6, 2-1 UMAC) dropped the third and final game of the weekend series against Crown College on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 6-2 in a rain shortened eight inning game.
The final game of the series between Northland and Crown would see the Jacks struggle with the bats, and the Storm come up with timely hits. The game started out as a pitcher's duel as a
Travis Hendrickson single would be the only hit either team could manage. The third inning would start the same as Northland managed to get the first two outs of the inning quickly before the Storm put together a two-out rally to take a 3-0 lead.
The Jacks would finally get some life as they got onto the board in the bottom of the fifth. Mitch Howard started the inning with a single, and advanced to second when
Shane Buckley managed to rope a grounder to third base on a hit and run. Howard advanced to third on a wild pitch before
Jacob Hodgdon drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Jacks tried to put together some two-out magic themselves as
Cody Leland would reach after being hit by a pitch, and
Nathan Brown would single, but Crown was able to limit the damage and end the inning still up 3-1.
Crown would have an answer in the top half of the sixth, however. The Storm managed to load the bases with one out before the game halted for a short time due to the rain. After the rain stopped, Crown singled to right field and looked to score a pair of runs, but
Jacob Hodgdon would have a fantastic throw, and get the runner at the plate. Northland found a way to end the inning at 5-1, stranding a pair of Storm runners on the bases.
The Storm added an insurance run in the top half of the eighth, before the Jacks tried to put together a final rally. The first two Northland hitters would be retired quickly before
Peter Aerts started the rally with a single. Hendrickson followed this up by walking, and
Matt Lennon being hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded,
Colin Moberly would single to bring in Aerts. Northland wouldn't be able to get another two-out hit, though, and the game was called due to the rain with a final of 6-2.
Matt Lennon would go 1x2 and was hit by pitches twice, while
Jacob Hodgdon and
Colin Moberly had the only runs batted in for Northland.
