Jacks Cruise Past Crown

4/5/2013 11:21:00 PM

MINNETRISTA, Minn. - Northland College (5-5, 2-0 UMAC) had a pair of great pitching performances as the Jacks came away with a twin bill sweep with finals of 10-0 in seven innings, and 8-0.

The Jacks started out game one fast and eventually came away with a ten run victory in seven innings.  The bottom of the first started with a Cody Leland single, and Nathan Brown would drive Leland in during the next at bat.  After Peter Aerts, and Travis Hendrickson were hit by pitches, Matt Lennon and Colin Moberly would both be able to draw walks.  The Jacks wouldn't be able to manage to push another run across but would score three runs on two hits over the inning.

Northland again scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth when Jacob Mogged got the inning going with a one out walk, which was followed with a Leland double.  Aerts then drove in both Mogged and Leland with a two-out single.  Hendrickson followed that up by drawing a walk, when Matt Lennon would step to the dish and rip a double down the left field line to score Aerts.  This gave Northland a comfortable 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth the LumberJacks pushed across another pair of runs to extend their lead.  The inning started with an Aerts single.  Hendrickson then beat out a double play ball, and Matt Lennon would draw another walk.  Moberly would draw another walk himself after Hendrickson and Lennon would pull off a perfect double steal.  Mitch Howard and Nick Smith both drew walks to bring in the pair of runs.

Northland remained patient at the plate in the bottom of the seventh as three of the first four batters the LumberJacks sent to the plate reached via a walk or hit by pitch.  A pair of fielder's choices brought in Aerts and Hendrickson to give the Jacks the 10-0 mercy rule victory.

Dan Romano (2-1) was excellent on the bump for the Jacks getting the complete game shutout win.  Romano would scatter three hits, and struck out four hitters in his 7.0 innings of work.

Cody Leland led the team going 3x5 with two runs scored, while Peter Aerts, Matt Lennon, and Colin Moberly would have two runs batted in each.

BOX SCORE GAME 1

The Jacks saw their bats start off cold in game two, but managed to start their scoring in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Northland was efficient in the inning scoring two runs off of two hits.  Peter Aerts started the inning by drawing a walk, and would score on a hit and run with Travis Hendrickson ripping a double down the right field line.  Hendrickson then scored off a Colin Moberly one out single to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead.

Northland would get back on the sticks the next inning that started when Jacob Hodgdon was hit by a pitch.  Cody Leland would lay down a sacrifice bunt to move Hodgdon, and Nathan Brown followed that up by drawing a walk.  After Crown would pitch out on an attempted suicide squeeze, Peter Aerts would be hit by a pitch, and Brown and Aerts would advance to second and third on a wild pitch shortly after.  Matt Lennon continued to stay hot from the plate as he would drive both in with a single.

The bottom of the seventh saw Northland chase the Crown starter when Hendrickson led the inning off with a double, and Lennon hit him in with another single.  With a fresh arm on the mound, Colin Moberly would hit a sacrifice fly to right field to move Lennon to third.  Lennon would then beat out a play at the plate off the Mitch Howard fielder's choice.  After Howard would steal a base, Hodgdon would hit a double down the left field line to score Howard and give Northland the comfy 7-0 lead.  Northland would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on their way to the 8-0 victory.

Brandon Bodart (2-1) would follow in Romano's footsteps by going 8.0 scoreless innings on his way to earning the win.  Bodart scattered four hits while striking out eight in the victory.

Travis Hendrickson would go 3x4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.  Matt Lennon would stay hot as well going 3x5 with three runs batted in.  Nathan Brown managed to draw four walks in the win.
