APPLETON, Wis. - Northland College (8-9, 2-3 UMAC) split a twinbill on Thursday afternoon against Lawrence University, falling 4-2 in game one and rallying late in game two for a 10-5 victory.
The Northland bats would go cold in game one as they only managed four hits as they dropped game one. Lawrence got the scoring going first as they pushed across two runs in the bottom half of the second. Northland had an answer in the fifth as they were able to plate a pair of runs as well.
Nathan Brown would have a clutch two-out double to bring home
Jacob Mogged and
Cody Leland, and this tied the game at 2-2. The tie didn't last long, however, as the Vikings would push across another run to retake the lead in the bottom half of the frame. Lawrence added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to bring the game to the 4-2 final.
Dan Romano (2-2) pitched well for the Jacks taking the tough luck loss. Romano finished with the complete game with three strikeouts.
Game 1 Box
Northland bats would again start out cold for game 2, and Lawrence would come out swinging. Lawrence found a way to stay consistent on offense to start as they scored a run in each of the first three innings. Northland managed to push across runs in the top of the third and the sixth.
Northland would wake up their bats when they were able to get to the Lawrence bullpen for the last two innings. Entering the eighth inning the Jacks found themselves down 5-2.
Travis Hendrickson started the inning with a double into left-center, which was followed by a
Matt Lennon walk.
Colin Moberly then was able to single into left and brought home Hendrickson. This single was able to chase the Viking starter. Northland brought a lot of patience to the plate when Lawrence got into their bullpen as
Cody Leland,
Jacob Mogged, and
Brandon Jahnke would draw three straight one-out walks.
Peter Aerts ripped a single up the middle to bring home a run.
Travis Hendrickson then drove in a pair of runs in his second at bat of the inning with a two-out single with Aerts being thrown out at the plate on a close play. The Jacks plated six runs off of only four hits for the inning, and took an 8-5 lead.
With insurance runs on their mind Northland plated a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. The Jacks started the inning with Lennon and Moberly each drawing a walk.
Dan Romano moved both runners with a ground out to short, and
Cody Leland took advantage by bringing home both runs off of a fielder's choice. This insurance ended up to be more than enough as the Northland bullpen was able to shut the door and give Northland the 10-5 victory.
Brandon Bodart (3-2) would battle 7.0 innings giving up four earned runs and getting the win.
Jacob Smith and
Logan Schuman would each throw an inning a piece and were able to shut down the Lawrence bats by holding the Vikings scoreless and only allowing a hit each.
Travis Hedrickson kept up his hot hitting by going 3x4 with two runs batted in and scoring two runs in the comeback victory.
