TUCSON, Ariz. - Northland College (1-4) dropped a twin bill to Marian University by finals of 4-2, and 19-2.
The Jacks would struggle from the plate in both games as Marian was able to sweep the Jacks dropping Northland to 1-4. Game one would be a tight affair for all seven innings. Marian would be able to get on the scoreboard first in a big way when they would take advantage of some defensive miscues from the Jacks and would be able to score three runs in the opening frame. Marian would tack on another run in the next inning and extended their lead to 4-0. This is all the Sabres would be able to manage, however.
Then in the top of the 3rd the Jacks would manage to get on the scoreboard themselves. Nick Smith would get a one out single, and the rest of the damage would be done with two outs.
Peter Aerts would get the rally going as he was able to get beamed by a pitch, which was then followed by
Nathan Brown drawing out a long battle ending with a walk. Then with the bases loaded
Matt Lennon was able to get a single that scored Smith and Aerts. The next couple innings were a good pitcher's duel as neither team could manage to find some holes. The Jacks defense would show signs of life as
Colin Moberly would make a diving play in the bottom of the fifth that was able to double off a Sabre runner at first that would end any thoughts of the Sabres extending their lead.
Needing a rally, the Jacks would try to start another two out rally in top of the 7th.
Cody Leland would start the rally when he was hit by a pitch, while Aerts would follow this up with a single. With the go ahead run at the dish, Northland was unable to push any runs across, sealing a 4-2 defeat.
Matt Lennon would go 1x3 and was able to bring in both of the runs for the Jacks.
Brandon Bodart (1-1) would have a solid outing as he was able to have another complete game. Bodart would scatter seven hits and only allow one earned run over his 6.0 innings.
BOX SCORE GAME 1
The second game would start out similarly to game one, but the Marian bats would explode for six runs in the third inning and a twelve spot in the fourth inning, as the Sabres were able to cruise comfortably to their 19-2 win.
Tyler Frieders would make his debut as a LumberJack as he would provide an inning of relief.
Jacob Smith would also make his LumberJack debut on the mound in relief going 3.0 innings and only allowing one hit.
BOX SCORE GAME 2
The Jacks finish off their spring trip tomorrow when they take on Cornell for a double header with game one slated for 11:00 am CST.
