Jacks Struggle Late, Fall to Condordia Chicago

3/5/2013 4:21:00 PM

TUCSON, Ariz. - Northland College (1-2) was able to hang around with Concordia Chicago early, but the Cougars took advantage of Jack mistakes late as Northland was defeated 10-0.

The Jacks offense would struggle all day long, and the defense would have it's troubles late as the Jacks fell to Concordia Chicago.  The first inning would lack drama but Northland would be able to build a little momentum in the top half of the second inning.  Matt Lennon would hit a one out double to get the offense going, which was followed by a Ryan Johnson walk.  Johnson and Lennon would be able to execute a double steal to put runners on 2nd  and 3rd with one out.  These runners would be stranded, however, after a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.  Concordia would be able to score in the bottom half of the inning and take a 1-0 lead.  The Cougars wouldn't take long to plate more runs as they were able to score two more the very next inning and extend to a 3-0 lead.  The next three innings would see both pitchers settle in as neither team could find a way to score.  The Jacks would be able to load the bases in the top of the 7th inning, but wouldn't be able to plate any runs, and this would deflate moral for the Jacks.  Concordia would be able to cruise after this, and the Cougars would go on to a 10-0 win.

Dan Romano (0-1) would pitch excellent in his first career start as a Jack going 5.0 innings and only allowing one earned run, while A.J. Verhage would make his LumberJack debut on the mound.

Mitch Howard would keep up his streaky hitting going 2x3, while Ryan Johnson would go 1x2 with a pair of walks, and Colin Moberly would go 2x4 in his first game of the season.

BOX SCORE

The Jacks will next play St. Mary's (Minn.) in a reserve game on Thursday, March 7th, at 1:30 pm CST, which will then be followed by a varsity game with Wartburg College at 4 pm CST.
