Jacks Open Season with Split

TUCSON, Ariz. - Northland College (1-1) was able to come back late in game one of a doubleheader with Presentation College and came away with an 8-6 victory but fell in the second game of the twinbill by a final of 12-5.

The first game would start out slow for Northland, but the LumberJacks would be able to come back late in the game to come away with an 8-6 win.  Both offenses would start out quick as both teams were able to score a run in each of the first two innings.  Presentation would be able to jump out to the first lead of the game when they were able to score two runs in the third and take the 4-2 advantage.  The Northland bats wouldn't be able to get anything going in the fourth, but Presentation would be able to extend their lead to 5-2.

The momentum would swing in the top of the fifth inning as the bottom of the Northland lineup was able to produce some much needed offense.  The inning would start with Brandon Jahnke being hit by a pitch, followed by a triple ripped down the line by Mitchell Howard to score Jahnke.  Howard would score off a Cody Leland single the very next at bat.  Leland would advance to second on an error, and Nathan Brown would follow the Leland hit with a walk.  The Saints would catch a break as a Peter Aerts line drive right at the Saint shortstop was able to produce a quick double play, but the Saint lead was cut to 5-4.  Presentation would score a run in the bottom half of the frame, but the Jack offense was back at it in the top of the 6th.  Ryan Johnson would hit a one out triple, and Jahhnke would reach on a walk before Howard would hit a two-out triple to score both Johnson and Jahnke to tie the game at six.  The Saints would get a base runner via a lead off walk, but wouldn't be able to do anything with the free pass and for the first inning of the game they wouldn't score a run.

Northland would ride the momentum from scoring two runs in the previous two innings and were able to put up another two spot on the board.  The inning would start the inning with a Nathan Brown walk, and Brown immediately was able to steal second shortly after.  With Brown at second, Peter Aerts would rope a single but Brown would be held up at third.  Travis Hendrickson would move Aerts to second, with Dan Romano stepping up to the dish.  Romano and Brown would perfectly execute a suicide squeeze that would give the Jacks a 7-6 lead.  The inning wouldn't be done, however, as Johnson would be able to bring in Aerts with a double and the Jacks were able to build an 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the 7th.  The Presentation bats would again be quieted as they would go 1-2-3 in the 7th preserving the 8-6 Northland victory.

Brandon Bodart (1-0) would get the complete game victory on the mound as he was able to keep the Jacks in the game scattering ten hits and only allowing four earned runs in his 7.0 innings of work.

Mitchell Howard would have a great Northland debut going 3x3 with two triples and four runs batted in.  Ryan Johnson would have a good game at the dish as well going 3x4 with two runs scored and a run batted in.

BOX SCORE GAME 1

Similarly to the first game of the double header, the Jacks would get out to a slow start, but Presentation would put up a crooked number in the second inning to make sure Northland couldn't come back.  Presentation would jump out to a quick 1-0 lead after one before scoring five runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead after an inning and a half.  All of the Saint runs would be scored with two outs as the Jacks would walk two batters and commit two errors all the while only needing one out to end the inning.  Northland would manage two runs in the bottom half of the inning with a Shane Buckley ground out that plated Matt Lennon, and a Mitch Howard single that would score Ryan Johnson.  Tyson Paulson would be able to hold the Northland bats in check for the rest of the game, however.  Presentation would be able to extend their lead with runs in the 5th and the 7th.  The Jacks would be able to plate three runs in the bottom half, but had dug themselves too big of a hold to come back, as they would fall by a final of 12-5.

Kyle Strom (0-1) would take the loss for the Jacks, while Matt Lennon would go 2x3 with a run scored and a run batted in.

BOX SCORE GAME 2

Northland takes on Concordia University Chicago for a single nine inning game tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 am CST.
