DULUTH, Minn. – The Northland College Baseball team fell in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener 5-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Thursday afternoon in Duluth, Minn.
Northland was threatening in the first inning.
Nathan Davison was hit by a pitch,
Dezmon LeTexier drew a walk and
Peyton Solberg singled to load the bases with only one out. The following two Northland batters flew out to right field, leaving the runners stranded.
Andrew Birko started on the bump and had a one-two-three first inning.
The Yellowjackets would take the lead in the third inning. A hit and error put two on for UW-Superior. With runners on the Yellowjackets would record three more hits and advance a runner home on an error to score four runs. In the fifth, UWS scored its fifth run on a sac fly.
The next 14 batters for the LumberJacks would go down in order. LeTexier reached base for the second time, this time singling through the left side. Solberg would follow that up by getting a free pass to first after wearing a pitch. Northland would not be able to capitalize, leaving two more men on base. Down to their final out,
Gabe Villa would reach first after getting hit by a pitch but would remain there as Northland would fall 5-0 to UW-Superior.
Northland recorded two hits in the game coming from Solberg and LeTexier. LeTexier had the team's sole walk. Davison, Solberg, and Villa all reached base after getting hit by a pitch.
Birko pitched six innings with two strikeouts, two earned runs, two walks, and gave up seven hits.
Kazdion Mount pitched the final two innings for the Jacks not giving up a hit and strikeout one batter.
The LumberJacks and Yellowjackets conclude the three-game series tomorrow (Friday) with the first pitch of the doubleheader slated for 1 p.m.
