SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Northland College Baseball team was defeated in both games of the doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Superior 13-1 and 13-3 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action Friday afternoon in Superior, Wis.
With two outs in the first,
Nathan Davison hit a hard ball to the third baseman and was able to reach on an error. The junior advanced to second on a wild pitch to get in scoring position.
Ridge Guyette got a hit to shallow right field to put the LumberJacks on the board early.
The Yellowjackets got their second baserunner of the game in the third inning after an error with two out. The following batter put UWS on top with a two-run home run. The next two batters would single to put runners on the corners. Another home run had UWS on top 5-1 to end the third inning. The Yellowjacket continued to strike and took game one 13-1.
Northland had two hits in the first game of the doubleheader coming from Guyette and
Jonjay Arreazola. Davison scored the sole run for the Jacks and Guyette had the lone NC RBI.
Ethan Boyce pitched 4.2 innings for Northland striking out six batters, giving up seven hits and three earned runs.
Dezmon LeTexier pitched the final 1.1 innings.
LeTexier had the first hit of game two with a single to left center in the opening inning but was left on base to end the inning. UW-Superior took the lead with a solo home run in the first. The Yellowjackets had the bases loaded in the first but
Peyton Solberg stuck the final batter to keep the score at 1-0.
Grant Vessey had a lead-off single to start the second inning and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Vinny Cooney moved the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt, but the Jacks were unable to level the score. After recording the first out in the third UWS had three straight hits to double its lead. Northland got out of the inning after catching a runner trying to steal home on a double steal.
LeTexier had his second hit of the game in the fourth with a lead-off single.
Anthony Boyle followed up with a double, scoring LeTexier to bring Northland within one. The Yellowjackets would get the run back in the following inning after a pair of defensive errors. A sac fly in the fifth would add one more run for UWS.
After two outs in the sixth Boyle reached base with a single up the middle. Vessey followed with a single through the left side to put two on. The hitting streak continued as Cooney singled to right field scoring Boyle and Vessey followed scoring on an error by the catcher to cut the lead to one.
Walks and errors hurt Northland in the sixth. The Yellowjackets took their largest lead of the game after drawing three walks and capitalizing with runners in scoring position. Northland got out of the sixth inning after
Mychal Castillo threw out the runner trying to advance 90 feet. UW-Superior would score two more runs in the seventh to win 13-3.
In game two, the LumberJacks had seven hits with LeTexier, Boyle, and Vessey recording two and Cooney having one. Boyle has Northland's only extra-base hit with a double in the fourth inning. Boyle and Cooney recorded their first RBIs of the season. Solberg started on the mound of NC, pitching five innings with five strikeouts, and gave up six earned runs.
The LumberJacks will travel to Hamline University on Wednesday for their next game. First pitch is slated for 10:30 a.m.
