Women’s Hockey drops final regular season game

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team was defeated 9-0 by the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in Ashland, Wis.

Northland had an early opportunity with a power play in the first three minutes of the game. Kyleigh Moffatt was able to get a shot on target, but it was saved. After the power play ended, the Yellowjackets scored their first goal and, seconds later, added a second. The scoring didn't stop there for UWS, as they netted another even-strength goal and a power-play goal.

The Yellowjackets continued their hot streak, scoring two more early goals in the second period. Tate Hutchinson recorded the first NC shot of the period, with Moffatt taking a shot on goal shortly after. Northland was unable to beat the goaltender, as UW-Superior finished the period up 7-0.

The LumberJills managed to fire a few more shots in the final period, but it was not enough, as they fell 9-0.

Moffatt led the offense with three shots on target, with Yvonne Durfee and Julia Fussy finishing behind her with two each. Defensively, Neveah Trihey blocked a team-high four shots, while Durfee, Karsyn McQuaker, and Kylie Schryer each stopped two. In net, Zoey Soost made 13 saves, and Zoe Laming saved 35.

The LumberJills and Yellowjackets will face off again on Feb. 25 for the first round of the WIAC Tournament in Superior, Wis., with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
