ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team fell 0-8 to the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Thursday night in Ashland, Wis., in their penultimate home game of the season.
Northland started the game on the back foot, with the Blue Devils scoring on their first shot. On the other side of the ice, the Jacks had attempts from
Brock Hart and
Ben Stewart. Nine minutes into the period, Northland was on the penalty kill.
Dakota Meyer made three saves during the two-minute kill, but one minute later, UWS doubled its lead. Late in the period, the Jacks were shorthanded again, and with six seconds left in the frame, the Blue Devils scored once more.
Meyer was tested early in the second period, making four saves in the first 30 seconds. Northland had their first power play opportunity a minute in, but a turnover in the neutral zone allowed UWS to extend its lead. After the goal,
Joe Weber fired a few shots on target, but Northland was unable to score. Before 10 minutes had passed in the second period, the Blue Devils had built a 6-0 advantage.
Andrew Yocum entered the net for the Jacks after the sixth goal and finished the period with five saves.
UW-Stout opened the third period with another early goal, and before time expired, the Blue Devils added another to make it 8-0. The Jacks fired 11 shots on target in the third but were turned away.
Hart led the Jacks with six shots on goal, four of which came in the final period. Stewart,
Zach Hutchinson, Weber, and
Nolan Christy each recorded three shots on goal. Defensively,
Trey Taylor blocked five shots, while Hart and
Sam Holy each had three. In goal, Meyer made 36 saves, and Yocum stopped 16.
The Jacks will play their final home game of the season on Saturday against UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
