AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Northland College Baseball team lost in its final game in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational 9-1 to Drew University Friday morning in Auburndale, Fla. Senior
Zach Ross hit the team's first home run of the season, scoring the Jacks' run.
After his impressive outing on Wednesday,
Vinny Troccoli made the start on the mound. After giving up a lead-off walk, the senior got out of the inning, stranding a runner. The Jacks were threatening in the bottom of the first.
Tyler Murphy reached on an error followed by a single from Ross had both runners in scoring position with only one down. After a strikeout and flyout, the score remained at zero.
The following inning Northland had two base runners in
Andy Linder and
Caden Willis after a single and walk. The inning ended after Linder was thrown out trying to swipe a bag.
The Rangers scored their first runs in the game in the third inning. A single, triple, and sac fly had DU up 2-0 with only one out in the inning. Drew added one more with an RBI double before the inning was over. In the fourth, the Rangers added another to their lead and added two more in the fifth.
Northland got a run back after Ross went deep for the first LumberJack home run this season to cut the lead to 6-1. The Jacks could not score any more runs as Drew pushed three more across the plate to win 9-1.
Northland had its best-hitting performance of the week with nine hits but only scored one run. Willis led the team with three hits, two singles, and a double. He also reached base a fourth time drawing a walk.
Hunter Wicklund and Ross had a multiple-hit game as well both recording two. Ross had the team's sole run and RBI.
Troccoli pitched two scoreless innings to start the game. He only allowed one hit and walked one batter, along with striking out one. Matthew Trager entered the game in the third inning and pitched three innings. Trager struck out one, walked three, and gave up six earned runs.
Dezmon LeTexier finished the game pitching the final four innings. Kobryn Brandon earned the winning after five scoreless innings and five strikeouts.
The Jacks travel to Kenosha, Wis., next weekend as they play Rockford University and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday and Saturday.
