MANKATO, Minn. – In the series finale the Northland College Baseball team was defeated 11-4 by Bethany Lutheran College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn.
Like the previous two games the Vikings jumped to a hot start, this time scoring five runs in the first two innings.
Matt Simpson got the Jacks on the board with his first home run of the season.
Kazdion Mount started the fifth inning with a leadoff double.
Zach Ross scored Mount with a single to left center. Northland could not add more, leaving two runners stranded.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings regained their two-run lead after a solo home run. The scoring stopped until the eighth inning when the LumberJacks started to string together hits.
Tyler Murphy led off the inning with a lead-off single. As a pitch hitter,
Vinny Troccoli entered the game and scored Murphy off a double to left center.
Dezmon LeTexier singled to put runners on the corners followed by an RBI single by Mount to make the score 7-4. The Jacks hit into a double play, followed by a ground out ended the inning for NC.
The Vikings added four more runs in the eighth to win 11-4.
The Jacks recorded a season-high 13 hits but also left 10 runners on base. Four student-athletes had a multiple-hit game:
Peyton Solberg, Murphy, Mount, and Simpson. Northland had four extra-base hits with doubles from Solberg, Mount, and Troccoli and a home run from Simpson.
Caden Willis drew the sole walk for the Jacks.
Andrew Birko made his third start of the season. The junior pitched five innings allowing six earned runs. Troccoli pitched the sixth inning only allowing one earned run. Mount pitched 1.2 innings and Solberg got the final out. Trent Ash earned the win after working six innings with eight strikeouts and only allowing two runs.
The Jacks start their next conference series next week when they travel to the University of Minnesota, Morris with the first game at 3 p.m., on Friday.
