MORRIS, Minn. – The Northland College Baseball team takes the first game of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference series 15-11 over the University of Minnesota, Morris Friday evening in Morris, Minn. Senior
Vinny Troccoli lead the scoring for Northland with two home runs and eight RBIs in the win.
The win improves Northland to 2-12 overall and 1-5 UMAC and the Cougars fall to 7-11 and 2-2 in the conference.
After a scoreless first inning, the Jacks loaded the bases with an error and a pair of walks. Troccoli came to the dish and sent the ball out of play for his first collegiate home run to give Northland a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars responded with five runs to take their first lead.
In the fourth inning,
Bryce Smith reached base on a single to left center. The senior catcher advanced to third after two wild pitches. Troccoli recorded his fifth RBI of the game scoring Smith to level the game at five.
Landen Meyerdirk put UMM ahead with a solo shot in the fifth inning. Troccoli continued to impress at the plate this time with a three-run home run in the sixth to put NC back on top. Northland's first eight runs were all driven in by Troccoli. The Cougars still had an answer, putting up three runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain their one-run lead.
In the seventh, the bats were hot for the Jacks.
Tyler Murphy recorded his first knock of the game followed by a pinch-hit single from
Dezmon LeTexier. Simpson doubled to score Murphy and LeTexier with his first hit of the game.
Zach Ross added one more run with an RBI double to right field. On the mound, Troccoli started the seventh with a pair of strikeouts and got out of the inning without giving up a run.
Murphy sent his first over the fence for a three-run homer for his first of the season. With the home run the Jacks put up three runs for the third consecutive inning.
Kazdion Mount joined the home run party with a solo shot in the ninth for his first in a Northland uniform to give the Jacks a 15-10 lead.
Anthony Boyle ended the game on the mound striking out two batters to help the LumberJacks win 15-11 for their first conference win of the season.
Northland tallied 10 hits in the win. Troccoli and Murphy paced the team with two hits, the pair combining for three home runs. Troccoli also led the team in RBIs with eight. Mount, Ross, and Simpson all had had extra-base hits. Mount and Troccoli scored three times in the contest and Murphy, Simpson, and Smith all scored twice.
Andrew Birko made the start on the mound. The junior pitched 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and gave up six earned runs. Troccoli entered the game in the fifth and pitched 3.1 innings and earned his first win of the season. He struck out four batters and gave up five earned runs. Boyle pitched the final inning, striking out two batters, and only gave up one hit.
The Jacks and Cougars wrap up the series tomorrow (Saturday) with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
