Game Recap: Baseball |

Vikings take the first two games of the series over LumberJacks

MANKATO, Minn. – The Northland College Baseball team was defeated in the first two games of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference series against Bethany Lutheran College 2-12 and 1-6 Friday afternoon in Mankato, Minn.

The Vikings started fast putting up eight runs in the first three innings. The Jacks scored their runs coming off an error that scored Peyton Solberg and Hunter Wicklund. The Jacks' offense stopped there as BLC pushed four more across the plate to take game one.

The Jacks recorded four hits in the contest with Solberg leading the team with two. Tyler Murphy and Caden Willis had the other two. Solberg had the team's sole extra-base hit with a double in the fourth. Ridge Guyette, Wicklund, and Willis all reached base from a walk.

On the mound, Ethan Boyce started the game and pitched three innings with three strikeouts and gave up six earned runs. Grant McCurry pitched the sixth inning and did not allow a run and stuck out one batter. Gavin Jacobson earned the win after not allowing an earned run through 5.2 innings.

In game two, the Vikings struck first again, this time scoring six in the first two innings. Northland started to make some noise in the third with Solberg scoring Kazdion Mount with a sacrifice fly. The scoring stopped there for both with Northland leaving five runners stranded.

For game two, Anthony Boyle got the nod. After a rough two innings, he settled in and finished the game with three Ks and four earned runs. Matthew Traeger pitched the final three innings and only saw nine batters. The defense turned a 5-4-3-double play in the seventh.

The Jacks and Vikings wrap up the series tomorrow (Saturday) with a game slated for 1 p.m.

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference, and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
